Abstract
This chapter attempts to increase the awareness of the many challenges a person living with and dying with dementia presents to family and professional carers. It is important to understand the whole person's response to their illness in the context of their own life history. Better understanding of dementia enables all involved to move beyond the negative perceptions held of dementia to having hope in a person developing a meaningful life within the limitations of the disease.
