Abstract

Book review: Despite the growing amount of research over the last decade or so devoted to working life in the global film and screen industries, there has been relatively little knowledge about gender and the ways in which women navigate this industry. The barriers to diversity, particularly women’s participation in the film industry and screen culture, and how women directors navigate the broader gender order that advantages men within this industry, represent a lacuna in the literature. Furthermore, the role of women film directors – particularly in a changing digital landscape – is critical to narratives and understandings of the new economy, and the challenges that women continue to face in the twenty-first century.
