    Abstract

Knowledge Intensive Service Activities (KISA) are undertaken within firms in the course of innovation. Knowledge is produced and co-produced among actors within the firm through KISA. This chapter will set out approaches to understanding the role of KISA, discussing also such other elements in the innovation process as Knowledge Intensive Business Service (KIBS), Research and Technology Organisations (RTOs), and the wider network within which the firm is embedded. The analysis of KISA is important for understanding firms' innovation practices and opportunities, and is thus relevant for policy analysis and management strategy.
