Abstract
If there is only one planet Earth, the concept of globalization on the other hand is not monolithic and evolves in function with social, cultural and economic changes. The globalization of the 21st century certainly differs from that of the 20th. Even if the global economic and digital interdependency is stronger today than in the past, new political and populist fractures are taking place at the national level. This article employs the recent concept of the i-zation of society, as a new stage in the McDonaldization of society, to analyse the new advancements and impacts of digital capitalism on globalization. Through the usage of smartphones and other high-tech instruments, we are entering in a new process of understanding globalization which is being accelerated by the non-pharmacological measures put in place to fight against Covid-19.
