Abstract

Written by a sociologist of religion, this sequel to ‘Le Crépuscule de Torquemada’ is a gothic and historical based novel. It is a study of religious fanaticism set at the end of the 15th century in the Italian Renaissance. In the first volume, the main character, Torquemada, the leader of the Inquisition, organised a campaign to invade Hell (as inspired by the famous sculpture of the Gate of Hell by Auguste Rodin). The second part of this first book was set at the Vatican, and the main protagonist was confronted by the pope of his time, Rodrigo Borgia. The second volume of this series ‘Les possédés de la Renaissance’ sees the return of Torquemada who inverses rituals of exorcism to build an army of possessed people. This to conquer the Vatican and overthrown Borgia. A new pope will afterwards attempt to control Christianity from Avignon and the likes of Cesare Borgia, Leonardo Da Vinci, and Niccolò Machiavelli will intervene against the new anti-pope from the Vatican.
