Abstract

It has taken a while, but a new management style is beginning to pervade Australian businesses and higher education institutions. From our obsession with products and commodities, we have come to recognise at last that the issue of the day is the underlying process. Traditional management measured its performance by the quality of its product- it was product oriented. The emerging style of management is oriented towards processes. There are many reasons given to explain this shift. Perhaps the simplest, and easiest to understand, is the shift in focus from concern about outcomes to that of the processes which lead to the outcomes. It is the 'human factor' that is now assuming pre-eminence as a factor of production.
