Abstract

This study aims to investigate the participation trends, experiences, and barriers faced by LGBTIQA+ individuals in Australia. The survey data was collected as part of the 2024 Free to Exist Report. Key findings reveal high rates of homophobia, biphobia, and transphobia in sport and leisure contexts. To aid practice, the study also identifies successful interventions, such as the Rainbow Roadmap, Glam Slam, and Pride Cup, which demonstrate the effectiveness of education, community engagement, and inclusive programs in fostering safer and more welcoming environments. The implications of these findings are significant for policymakers, sport managers, and community leaders, as they underscore the need for targeted diversity management practices and inclusive frameworks that genuinely engage LGBTIQA+ communities. This research not only contributes to the academic discourse on LGBTIQA+ participation in sport and leisure but also provides practical recommendations for creating equitable and supportive environments.
