Abstract

This chapter will demonstrate literacy teaching and learning strategies that are engaging and move away from teacher directed instruction, which is particularly prevalent in Physical Education. Students in Health and Physical Education (HPE) learn through different types of activities and experiences, which involve a range of semiotic modes: visual, written, oral, gestural (bodily), spatial and multimodal. Similar to other areas of learning, we draw on a social constructivist approach to learning in HPE and learning the literacy of HPE (Light & Fawns, 2003; A. Luke, 1994). We will also focus on authentic contexts for the teaching and learning of HPE and literacy, where students are active constructors of meaning.
