    Abstract

This chapter examines two instances of what we suggest could be seen as moral panic around school English curriculum and pedagogy in Australia. Whilst the "whole language" debates of the mid-2000s and a current review of Australia's first national curriculum are separated by almost a decade, they demonstrate how media outlets represent educational problems, and we discuss whether the concept of "moral panic" may provide a theoretical framework for reading media discursive tactics.
