Literature teaching in the Australian curriculum : retaining key pratices

    Abstract

This essay draws on a model for curriculum planning in English that Mark (Howie, 2005) has developed on the basis of MacLachlan and Reid’s (1994) work on ‘framing’. This is designed to reflect aspects of models of English drawn from the history of the subject, placing those models in a complementary, rather than a competitive, position in relation to each other and with respect to their role in classroom curriculum planning. In this model, four ‘frames’ are used as the basis of curriculum planning: the subjective frame, the structural frame, the cultural frame and the critical frame.
