Abstract
Poverty is said to be like the 'plague' as it spreads and touches all countries and is seen as the consequence of inefficient and selfish relationships and the result of short term wealth over long term sustainable development. Images of poverty in the media tend to concentrate on thin, starving figures suggesting that food and money are the only forms of poverty. This image is only the icing on the cake as poverty is much more complex. Modern technology has the capacity to generate wealth but global poverty is increasing due to the poor distributional efficiency of post-industrial capitalism. While some people become 'mega rich' others have missed out on the development process as the commitment to social justice is not as high on the global agenda as political and economic priorities.
