Abstract

Mangrove MIDI Platform is a browser-based test work by Dr Greg Hughes exploring technical methods for visualising mangrove ecosystem data. The platform functions as a real-time particle synthesiser that converts MIDI data into a 3D visual system, with each note triggering particles whose physics are influenced by velocity, pitch, and duration to imagine flow patterns in mangrove ecosystems. Developed through AI-assisted co-coding via command-line interface (CLI) workflows with Claude (Anthropic) and Gemini (Google), the work tests approaches for translating bioelectric signals from mangrove trees—captured via sensors attached to leaves and roots—into MIDI data for visualisation. This forms part of preliminary technical research toward Remediation in The Rhizosphere, investigating methods to make invisible ecological processes perceptible through digital audiovisual means.
