Abstract
This dissertation argues that many aspects of the work of the New York architect Lebbeus Woods have a foundation in the philosophy of Friedrich Nietzsche. Lebbeus Woods has contributed a large body of theoretical work over the last two decades, including both projects and writings. This work forms the basis of an approach to what Woods calls "experimental architecture", which is intended to transcend what he considers the stifling constraints of conventional architecture.
The genealogical process, pioneered by Nietzsche, will be used as a reference point to demonstrate a Nietzschean heritage within the central themes and motives of the work of Woods. The dissertation examines common concerns that underwrite both thinkers, such as the death of God, the affirmation of life, politics, culture and human existence as well as more specific themes such as solitude, hte labyrinth, antigravity and war. Woods's position in these respects, both intellectually and stylistically, si seen to borrow significantly from Nietzsche's position and, in many ways, build upon it.
An understanding of the connection between Woods and Nietzsche is important as it allows a more detailed appreciation of Woods's architecture and its position within
Twentieth Century architectural discourse. This study also demonstrates a continuity and purpose within the work of Woods and provides a framework for interpreting the drawings and writing of this enigmatic architect.
