Abstract
This pilot study characterised peripheral aberrations over 42° × 32° of right eye visual fields for 5-mm diameter pupils. Peripheral refraction shifted negatively in diabetes and in the control groups relative to the field centre, but there was greater asymmetry for the former group. There was but little variation in spherical aberration co-efficient but horizontal coma changed more rapidly with field angle in the diabetes group (mean rate of change −0.012 deg/μm) than in the control group (−0.006 deg/μm). Consistent with other investigations of ocular optics and biometry, the results indicate that the eyes of people with diabetes act as older eyes than those of people of the same age without diabetes.
