Abstract

The basic researcher and the practitioner seem perpetually at odds. The basic researcher spends years building a beautiful model of the world. The practitioner takes one look at the model and says, "How will that help me to improve the lives of the clients I will work with this week?" The basic researcher often seems stumped for a legitimate answer. This chapter seeks to help bridge the gap between basic theory and practice, between obscure psychometric concepts and the concrete needs of the therapist sitting in the room with a client.
