Abstract
The Indonesian dreams as brought forward to you in this book encompass many facets of contemporary Indonesian everyday family or generational life. Gender relations form a central aspect of these ‘snapshot’ moments of family life and society. Besides finding itself on the threshold between modernity (‘Western’ or ‘Indonesian’-style) and local tradition, these gender relations are confronted with the changes in Indonesia’s political life. The downfall of President Suharto in 1998 was an important turning point in Indonesian political and social history. It marked the end of the so-called New Order, a 32-year period of authoritarianism. These changes had serious implications leading to religious reorganisations of many centralised institutions, media and the freedom of the press being one of them.
