Abstract
In taking on this tantalizing brief, I’m not going to make any “Whither/Wither Media Studies?†puns and will try not to be too preposterous in pronouncing on areas of the field, both spatially and in other respects, of which I have little knowledge. This commentary emerges from an experience, not untypical of my generation of people who came to media studies from formative disciplines (in this case sociology), of feeling both in and outside it and, by turns, attracted and repelled by what has been made of media studies.
