Abstract
This article outlines some of the developments in modularity and extensibility in the new media that signal a shift in the operations of the Web. It examines some of the ways software computing traditions inform these recent developments of extensible media, and of the emerging user-centred modular media that are rapidly transforming the communications landscape, and helping to implement the mediatisation of the World Wide Web.
