    Abstract

The article shares one person's map of Melbourne and discusses the ways in which four rock albums contribute to this map. It offers insights into how popular music contributes to larger meanings and understandings of place and culture. The study makes use of Lawrence Grossberg's work on effect which stresses the importance of the listener's interpretation of rock texts. It expands on Grossberg's assertion that rock music allows the construction of particular maps detailing what matters in daily life.
