Abstract

Health research and evidence-based practice still need to be improved in Indonesia. However, learning about research methodology is daunting for many Indonesian health workers and health profession students. Existing research methodology texts are often seen as non-user-friendly due to complicated writing style and lack of linkage between theories and practice. Furthermore, many research methodology texts (particularly for medicine and pharmacy) only address quantitative research methods and therefore omit the importance of qualitative and mixed research methods in studying complex health issues. This book is written by two Indonesian scholars who have been trained in research in Australia (BM) and The Netherlands (APS). This book explains the research process using a pragmatic approach which closely links each step in the research process with how to implement it in the Indonesian context and how to write it in a research proposal or report. Many examples are provided from the authors' experiences in studying, implementing and teaching research methodology in 3 countries (Indonesia, Australia and The Netherlands) across various disciplines (medicine, nursing, pharmacy and public health) and at different levels (undergraduate, master's and doctorate). Quantitative and qualitative research methods are introduced side-by-side throughout this book to facilitate comparison, contrast and comprehension. This book also introduces international conventions in research in order to prepare the readers to comprehend research reports from the global literature. Using a straightforward writing style and systematic, step-by-step approach, this book is expected to scaffold novice health researchers in designing, executing and reporting their research. The authors hope that through this process the novice health researchers would find that research is fun.
