Abstract
Mitochondria are autonomous cellular organelles present in most of the eukaryotic cells and are primarily responsible for cellular metabolism. Their structure essentially consists of four distinct compartments: the outer mitochondrial membrane, the intermembrane space, the inner mitochondrial membrane (IMM) and the mitochondrial matrix.
