Abstract

The response of oxygen uptake (VO2) to exercise is multiphasic, each phase being exponential and often achieving a plateau before the next phase begins. Although the physiological processes underlying this multiphasic response are unclear, we assume that to some extent they reflect processes within contracting skeletal myocytes. To explore this further, a simple and novel dynamical model of motor unit behaviour during exercise is presented that captures essential features of the exercise VO2 response.
