Modernising filial piety : the Asian tradition of intergenerational support and its implications for social work practice

Research output: Chapter in Book / Conference PaperChapter

Abstract

![CDATA[East Asia is one of the regions where Western social work, based on individual rights and social justice, has been increasingly infused into social work education and practice. In this region, however, the family is more likely to play a role as the bedrock of social assistance for people needing help and support. It is the tradition of filial piety (care and respect for older people) that has been essential to maintaining a family-centred value system and intergenerational practices. This chapter revisits the cooperative nature of this East-Asian filial tradition and offers a theoretical basis for developing the concept of extended social work in the 21st century.]]
