Abstract
![CDATA[Joint Probability Approach to design flood estimation can overcome some of the limitations associated with the currently recommended Design Event Approach. Joint Probability Approach/Monte Carlo simulation technique can account for the probabilistic nature and correlation of the principal model inputs in rainfall runoff modelling. Previous application of the Monte Carlo simulation technique to the data from Victoria and Queensland has demonstrated superiority of the Monte Carlo simulation technique over the Design Event Approach. Recently, there is a growing interest on the Monte Carlo simulation technique in relation to the upgrade of Australian Rainfall and Runoff. This paper uses data from 85 pluviograph stations in New South Wales to identify the distributions of rainfall duration for application with the Monte Carlo simulation technique to design flood estimation. It has been found that the two-parameter Gamma distribution can be used to specify the complete storm duration data in New South Wales. The future research will focus the regionalisation of the distributions of rainfall intensity, temporal pattern and losses for NSW which will assist the wider application of the Monte Carlo simulation technique to design flood estimation in NSW.]]
