Abstract
The purpose of this article is to trace the connection between changing images, imperatives and perceptions of the countryside surrounding Sydney, the consequent shaping of issues related to them and the kind of action proposed to address them. While the focus is on Sydney's rural-urban fringe, it is necessary to put this account within the context of changing emphases, perspectives and methodologies of metropolitan planning; the way fringe planning sits within landmark plans; and the political economy of the day.
