Abstract
What are the motivational correlates of students' engagement at school and future educational aspirations and how do these vary as a function of school subject domain? This study presents data from an investigation into Australian high school students' motivation and academic engagement in Mathematics, Science, and English. Students from six government high schools were administered the Student Motivation and Engagement Scale (SMES" Martin, 2001, 2003) as well as a set of educational 'outcome' measures including class participation, enjoyment of school, and future educational plans. Of particular interest was the extent to which different facets of the SMES related to these outcome measures in different subject domains. Data showed that there was domain specificity in the relative relationship of the factors underpinning the SMES and also in terms of relationships with the educational outcome measures.
