Abstract
This report provides an evaluation of a pilot multicultural settlement program that was developed and implemented by Football Federation Australia. The program aimed to use football as a tool to address marginalisation and isolation for newly arrived migrants and refugees. Sport occupies an important place within Australian society and it has been used to promote the shared values of the country and to aid the social integration of migrant and refugee populations. A review of academic literature and evaluations of similar projects was used to develop a Framework for Migrant and Refugee Integration Programs that provided the basis for the evaluation of the FFA’s program. The Refugee Council of Australia advocates for the use of qualitative methods to evaluate programs and this methodology was adopted here. Data for this project was captured via in-depth interviews with key stakeholders, observations at program sessions, and information generated by the project team. The report furthers understanding in this area and provides a series of recommendations for future programs. It also provides a framework for the evaluation of other projects.
