Research background
Munro is a re-imagining of the source material created for pilot episode of Cul-de-sac; a speculative series made for the ABC network. The overarching method for narrative development is that there was no predetermined dialogue in the script, but rather deep character dossiers and narrative triggers revealed to the actors on set, while shooting principal photograph. The aim was to illicit authentic responses and dialogue ‘in character’ during the multi-camera shoot. The specific temporal narrative outcome is determined through non-linear editing processes to assemble the scenes and sequence them to create meaning across the episode and resulting series. Munro changed the output format to a 13-episode series that embraces a character-led approach to the narrative, thereby breaking the chronological assembly of the long form episode of Cul-de-sac and shifting the meaning and relationships through this shift in associations.
Research contribution
In linear medium, such as tv, narrative assembly has usually been approached from a linear assemblage of time and production is carefully staged to represent this chronology. Further to this, the creative and industrial processes established since the 1920s operate in a linear and ‘assembly-line’ manner which does not allow for endless revisions of a process, once each stage is completed. Using contemporary non-linear digital creative tools, all the creative practitioners involved in making audio-visual linear works can operate in parallel and configure infinite possibilities while the work remains in flux, which can be described as a co-integrated creative practice. Munro is a practice-led example that demonstrates this principle, by re-configuring every aspect of a previously ‘completed’ TV series pilot, including music, sound design, visual scenes and dialogue, into a 13 episodes series that presents a new narrative arc.
Research significance
Munro is published by Michael Joy Films, previous winner of the AACTA best independent film for Men’s Group, finalist for Smoke Between Trees, and is available for digital online streaming. Noel Burgess is the composer, sound designer and sound mixer for Munro who’s music production work has received four ARIA nominations, has been selected as an ARIA and APRA judge and is a director on the board of the Australian Guild of Screen Composers (AGSC).
