Abstract
The role of body movement in creating and communicating music, and in conveying extra-musical meaning during performance, has attracted academic attention. Beyond the obvious need for a body to interact with a musical instrument in order to create musical sounds, the idea has been explored that musical meaning itself originates in the body, that music is experienced as movement ( for example, Cox, 2001, 2006; Davidson and Correia 2002; Malloch 2005; Cross and Morley, Chapter 5, Lee and Schögler,Chapter 6, and Panskepp and Trevarthen, Chapter 7, this volume).
