Not quite according to plan: ‘Seminal Papers in Business’

Research output: Chapter in Book / Conference PaperConference Paperpeer-review

Abstract

This paper aims to outline the somewhat unusual nature and purpose of a postgraduate subject, ‘Seminal Papers in Business’, that is run for the Master of Research at Western Sydney University. This subject is intended to expose students to a wide range of academic work which has proved to be seminal within various business disciplines. Its deeper purpose, however, is to expose students to critical analysis and open, interdisciplinary discussion.

The subject possesses two innovative general features. First, it intentionally rejects the common presupposition of ‘mono-pedagogy’ – that there is some single best approach to teaching. Rather, it explicitly embraces multi- and inter-disciplinary heterogeneity in terms of content and style of teaching – the virtues of which will be outlined and supported by interview-based evidence drawn from academic contributors to the subject. Second, the subject is innovative in an unintentional respect. In response to a number of challenges unique to the first feature, the subject has been able to evolve and adapt in such a way that, somewhat paradoxically, ‘things not going quite according to plan’ has proved to be desirable.
