    Abstract

![CDATA[High performance steel includes steel which is manufactured with improved strength, hardness, and corrosion resistance. Two forms of steel which fall into this category include high strength quenched and tempered steel and stainless steel. When these forms of structural steel are formed into sections and juxtaposed with concrete, significant benefits arise in terms of ductility, durability, stiffness and strength. This paper will explore the benefits associated with short column behaviour and will primarily focus on the benefits which can be derived with these configurations in columns of major landmark structures. The paper will take a three-pronged approach and will focus initially on the applications, including past, present and future projects. The paper will then give an overview of the behaviour of these elements and will explore research which has been conducted by the University of Wollongong group over the last decade. Finally, the paper will surmise the design approaches that need to be adopted to ensure both efficient and safe design of these structural elements.]]
