Abstract

The official history of women's football in Brazil is recent. The past of prohibitions and withdrawals associated with premises such as "womanhood" and the so-called "feminine nature", has a great influence on the difficulties faced by the sport until today. It is impossible to ignore the growth of women's football in Brazil, whether in the number of teams and professional athletes, or in the social debate about women in the sport. It is significant to remember that this process was not natural, much less without struggle, persistence, and participation of the athletes and women involved in the various areas of football culture. This article looks at the political and professional struggles associated with this growth, and examines how the pathways for Brazilian women's football will be in the next decade. It critically examines the recent policies produced by the Brazilian Football Federation, pointing out that, despite some advancements such as the creation of the Women's Football Working group at a national level, there are several issues within the sport that are yet to be addressed to build a solid future. It concludes by setting up an agenda with six priorities that, if accomplished, will see the constant growth of the sport in the next few years.
