    Abstract

The NSW Suburb Labs website was created by the Powerhouse Museum in 2010 as a pilot initiative supported by the NSW Government’s Chief Information Office. The website was developed with a view to encouraging the wider take-up and use of broadly accessible platforms for hyper-local publishing by local communities. Locations identified within the trial were based within NSW Government broadband test-bed sites. Through map-based interfaces, tag clouds, and editorial blog posts, the website encourages users to engage with materials sourced from a number of cultural and scientific collections belonging to the NSW Government. This is complemented by use of social media tools such as Flickr Groups to showcase photography sourced from local areas. Mobile publishing has also been trialed through use of the MyTours publishing platform within a specific test-bed location.
