Abstract
Herbert Cole ('Nugget') Coombs was an economist, and it helps to understand his importance if we recall that it was during his life span (1906-1997) that economics became the most important idiom in which to understand public questions. By isolating and elevating the economic and financial aspect of a widening range of issues, economists have claimed a special intellectual authority in public affairs since the Great Depression.
