Numerical simulation of impact pile driving and its effect on far field

Abstract

Increase in construction activities due to rapid population growth in recent years has consumed most of the urban lands, making the land suitable for construction a scarce resource in urban areas. This has resulted in uitilising the smaller land plots available adjacent to existing buildings by constructing high-rise buildings. Construction of such structures involves significant ground vibrations due to pile installation. One method of pile driving is impact pile driving. This study investigates the effect of impact pile driving on far field of a driven pile. The impact pile driving is simulated using a set of axisymmetric models in ABAQUS/Explicit. Wave transmitting boundaries were used to truncate the axisymmetric models beyond the region of interest. The selected modelling technique is first verified using field data available in the literature. Simulations were carried out at two different levels of penetrations. Four different impact forces are selected to investigate the influence of amplitude and the rise time of the impact force on the intensity of peak particle velocity (PPV) distributions away from the driven pile. Results show that an increase in rise time and the amplitude of the impact force increase the intensity of impact pile driving on the far field.
