Abstract
![CDATA[This paper presents a numerical study on both empty and concrete-filled square hollow section (CFSHS) T-joints (t≤3 mm) using finite element analysis (FEA). The distribution of the stress concentration factor (SCF) and the maximum value of the SCF at the weld toes of empty and CFSHS T-joints were captured by developing three-dimensional finite element (FE) models using ABAQUS software. In this investigation, the empty T-joints are made up of empty SHS brace and empty SHS chord members. However, for concrete-filled T-joints, the specimens comprised of empty SHS brace and CFSHS chord members. Four empty and corresponding concrete-filled SHS-SHS T-joints were modelled and subjected to static in-plane bending load on the brace. The peak SCF obtained from ABAQUS will be compared with the experimental SCFs that were carried out by Mashiri and Zhao (2010). The maximum SCFs at the hot spot location in empty T-joints are higher than the maximum SCFs in concrete-filled T-joints. There is a good agreement between the numerical results and the experimental results for each identical non-dimensional parameter T-joint.]]
