Abstract
The reproductive system of both males and females consists of primary (or essential) organs and secondary (or accessory) organs. The primary reproductive organs are referred to as gonads . The female gonads are the ovaries; the male gonads are the testes. The main responsibility of the gonads is secretion of hormones and production of gametes (ova and sperm). Secondary (or accessory) organs are responsible for (1) transporting and nourishing the ova and sperm, and (2) preserving and protecting the fertilised eggs. Secondary (accessory) organs are discussed in the male and female reproductive portions of this chapter.
