Abstract
The local skin/stiffener strain state during failure initiation and propagation in stiffened elements was characterised using digital image correlation, fractography and FEA. Detailed mapping of the strain fields during loading was obtained and a link between failure initiation in bending element tests and full-scale panels was established.
