Abstract

Lecture delivered at the Sydney Writers Festival 2015, Curiosity Lecture Series. The pagan goddess of fortune stands at the centre of our lives, yet we are taught to rise above her, to make our own luck – until the luck runs out. Chinese culture is rich in techniques for attracting good fortune and chasing away bad. And there’s another kind of luck in simply surviving. How do we reconcile ourselves to the role of fortune in our lives?
