    Abstract

Essay in N. Jose & T. Morrell (Eds.), Stewart Macfarlane: Paintings. Stewart MacFarlane left Adelaide, South Australia, the ‘small city’ that was his home town, and moved to Sydney, Australia’s largest city, to become an artist. From there he found his way to art school in New York, which if not absolutely the world’s largest city in 1975, was the centre of the art world. From there he won prestigious residencies at Skowhegan, Provincetown and MacDowell that led him, in 1987-88, after many years of trying, to Roswell, New Mexico, and a residency at the Roswell Museum and Art Center. He was 33 and he was in the setting that would call forth some of his best paintings.
