Abstract
In his absorbing new memoir, One Kilometre: Conversations with Darri-ba Nungalinya, author John Altomonte details an extraordinary spiritual journey. “Darri-ba Nungalinya, the spirit being who watches over the earth and seas of Darwin, is revered by the Larrakia people, who are the traditional custodians of the land in this part of Australia” explains Altomonte. “Taking form as a rock that rises from the sea during low tide, Darri-ba, or Old Man Rock, revealed himself to me”. Through a series of visits to Darri-ba, Altomonte experienced seemingly indescribable sounds, thoughts and ultimately, an expanded awareness. Yet, through photography and journaling, Altomonte was able to record these atypical moments.
