Abstract
I liked my title, which I interpreted literally. I was a visiting fellow - a fellow, just visiting - a person passing through. The centre gave me a desk, and the director, a former US ambassador to New Zealand, put me on the VIP list for invitations. The Anzac Day service in Washington National Cathedral was the first big event to come around. It was New Zealand's turn to host the embassy reception afterwards. They flew in abalone and green-lipped mussels from Wellington and dozens of their crisp sauvignon blanc that was flooding the world at the time, 20 years ago now...
