Abstract

This paper investigates the problem of over-voltage transients on ac induction motors when connected to a pulse width modulated (PWM) variable speed drive (VSD) through a cable of arbitrary length. The system is modeled based on drive system and transmission line theory. The simulation program establishes a relation between the rise time of inverter switching pulses, the parameters of cable, and the terminal voltage. Most simulation results were verified by experimental test results conducted in the laboratory.
