Overcoming interim inertia

Research output: Chapter in Book / Conference PaperChapter

Abstract

Interim leadership at a senior level presents unique challenges for the institution and the interim leader. Coming about as it does when an incumbent leaves and the new leader is yet to be appointed, the length of time they are appointed for and the mandate they are given directly influences how the interim leader behaves and is perceived. A short-term appointment generally leads to a “just don’t break anything” approach, while longer appointments can resound with staff concerns about the validity of decisions made and whether things will change when the new leader is appointed.
