Overview of EMC and power quality issues in power systems

Abstract

A dramatic increase in the number of mains powered but electronically controlled equipment (computers, office equipment, electronic ballasts, variable speed drive, and consumer electronics) took place in the last two decades leading to a greater dependency on radio, telecommunication and electronic products. The usage of these products is possible only if the necessary criteria of PQ and EMC are met. Power Quality (PQ) and electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) are becoming increasingly important to electricity consumers at all levels of usage. This study introduces Power Quality and Electromagnetic Compatibility in general, provides an overview of the standards that establish noise limits, evaluates various mitigation techniques and looks at the future challenges.
