N2 - Having a baby is one of the most profound events in a woman and couple's life. For the woman, it is intensely physical as her body responds to the changing hormones and all body systems accommodate her growing fetus. For the couple, it marks a significant change in roles and in the relationship. While practices vary across cultures, as a society we recognize the importance of this event with rites of passage like for example "baby showers." In other words, having a baby is as much social as it is physical.
