Parramatta Profiles
Research Background
This work was developed over a two year period for Powerhouse Museum’s publishing arm Powerhouse Publishing. Parramatta Profiles is a writing and photographic series that profiles individuals across Parramatta communities. Drawing on art, music, religion, activism and sport, each snapshot captures life in this dynamic city. A collaboration between Powerhouse and the Writing and Society Research Centre, Western Sydney University, this project supports the development of student writers by providing an opportunity to work with professional editors and be published by Powerhouse online.
My role was to curate the collection, mentor the writers and to edit the work. All the work contained within the collection required considerable research from me in order to determine which groups, histories, places and events best represent contemporary Parramatta. Since I was working with emerging writers, I also ran workshops on the form of Creative Non-fiction for all the writers involved and edited each work several times.

Research Contribution
Parrmatta Profiles is a unique contribution to knowledge. Much of the content covered in this collection is not explored anywhere else: some of these topics include, an interview with the woman who established the Matildas, Australia’s first National Soccer team, an interview with The City of Parramatta’s youngest counsellor a profile of emerging Indigenous rap artist MattyB.
Evidence of Excellence
Powerhouse Museum is one of Australia’s leading and most influential galleries with substantial archives of National and International significance. When it opens at its new site in Parramatta, it is expected to receive 2 Million visitors each year. They work with high-calibre people and only produce high calibre work like Parramatta Profiles. Some of the pieces in this collection have already been picked up by The ABC, The Daily Telegraph and The Parramatta Advertiser, as well as being featured in Powerhouse’s regular newsletter which goes out to just over 150,000 people.
