Pattern of social life of autistic children : a study in Dhaka City

Abstract

Children with autism have social communication and interaction problem about which very little is known in Bangladesh. The present study is aiming to know the pattern of social life of the autistic children. It has been fund that in most cases the family members, relatives, neighbors and people of the community show negative attitude and treat them as a burden of the family and the society as well. The parents of the children under study have experienced mental distress, frustration to a little or more extent. The psychological, social, and emotional sufferings of mothers are much higher than the fathers. Most of the parents avoid participation in social functions and interaction along with their autistic children as they find difficulties to adapt with a man social situation. As a result, children with autism become the victims of isolation and remain less social in most cases. Many of the children’s life are surrounded within the boundary of house, classroom of and premises of the school. And the pattern of social life of the autistic children is much more different than that of other normal children.
