    Abstract

Ruby Payne-Scott was the first woman radio astronomer and a pioneer in solar radio astronomy in Australia. She played a key role in the early development of radio astronomy in the 1940s and the introduction of new techniques in the study of the universe. Her brilliant career was put to an end when her secret marriage was discovered by the authorities and she was deemed to have retired since women were not allowed to hold permanent positions in the public service.
