    Abstract

This chapter examines pedagogies that extend children’s current literacy understandings. It draws on the authors’ investigations into family and educator understandings of children’s literacy practices at home and in educational settings. One project involved observations of practice in two early childhood settings in the Illawarra region, New South Wales (Beecher 2012) and the other project is Teachers for a Fair Go, in which the first author was involved. Teachers for a Fair Go project investigated strategies used by effective teachers in classrooms from preschool to Year 12 in low socioeconomic areas of New South Wales. This chapter draws on the case study data from this project (for a full report see Munns, Sawyer and Cole 2013). These research projects highlight effective pedagogies used by educators to extend literacy learning.
